Practice profile, ethos and approach:

David Rea Architects is based in West London and was founded in 1997.

Many of our projects are designed for historic areas of cities or for rural areas of outstanding natural beauty. The expertise we have gained in working in these areas and our strong architectural approach has allowed our schemes to be accepted for sensitive sites.

The practice has an increasing interest in sustainable design for the protection of the environment and prudent use of natural materials, allied with the use of passive solar gain where possible and alternative energy uses.

We work on a variety of projects including single houses and flats for private individuals, retail design, restaurants and bars, and office spaces.

For each new project we develop a strategy that identifies the characteristics of each new challenge at an early stage .

The context and site are studied in detail, and the building needs are analysed in close consultation with the client. Once the site analysis has been established our emphasis moves on to the design of spaces, orientation, natural and artificial lighting and the exterior form of the building. Materials and finishes are designed at this stage.

We have a strong commitment to our ethos, which is to go well beyond simple problem solving to the development of inspiring buildings for living and working.

David Rea Architects received a Royal Institute of British Architects 2005 Regional Award for a residential building in southern England.

We have been shortlisted for the UK Wood Awards, for specialist use of wood in buildings.
