The Garden House

Our Clients purchased the site which already had consent to build a house sitting centrally on the site, and asked us to submit plans for a revised consent with a new design.

The Garden House draws upon the tradition of walled gardens and the garden buildings found within them . A walled garden is a frequently found feature, sited in the grounds of larger houses all over rural England.

Our research found that there are two categories of building type traditionally found in walled gardens :

1. Single storey lean-to buildings which line one or more sides of walled gardens.

2. Two storey buildings or pavilions, often used for accommodation. They often run perpendicular to the stretch of wall.

3. Walled gardens and their buildings were predominantly built of red brick.

The Garden House combines both types of building and uses two sizes of a long format red brick size which provides a contemporary feel to the elevations.

The two storey part appears as a pavilion, visible from outside the boundaries of the site, and providing views across a green belt protected landscape of open fields and woods.

The single storey part is substantially concealed from views from outside the site, and attaches itself to the new boundary as a lean to structure.
